The software patch, which essentially hacks Ingenuity’s flight computer software, will make the flight computer believe readings from one working sensor are coming from another sensor that recently stopped functioning. Ingenuity, which started flying on Mars in April 2021, has been in a reduced operation mode during Mars’ winter. During this season, Ingenuity has been shut down at night to preserve energy. SEE: NASA’s Mars helicopter just took these remarkable photos of the rover’s landing gear However, shutting down has meant internal temperatures of the aircraft at night drop to about minus 112 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 80 degrees Celsius), increasing the risk of electronic components becoming damaged, explains Håvard Grip, Ingenuity Mars Helicopter chief pilot at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory....

Oracle’s Q2 non-GAAP operating income was up 6% to $4.9 billion, and earnings per share was up 14% to $1.21. Total quarterly revenues were up 6% year-over-year to $10.4 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.11 per share on revenue of $10.21 billion. “These strong results are being driven by the 22% growth of our infrastructure and applications cloud businesses which are approaching $11 billion in annualized revenue,” CEO Safra Catz said in a statement....

The enterprise and government analytics company said it expects fourth quarter revenue of $418 million with 2021 revenue growth of 40% to $1.53 billion. Analysts were expecting fourth quarter sales of $401.9 million and $1.51 billion for 2021. Palantir reported a third quarter net loss of $102.1 million, or 5 cents a share, on revenue of $392 million, up 36% a share. Non-GAAP earnings were 4 cents a share in the third quarter....

The report sent Palo Alto Networks shares up over 5% in late trading. CEO Nikesh Arora remarked that Palo Alto “continued to benefit from strength across our three security platforms, driven by strong cybersecurity demand, organizations architecting for hybrid work and growing their hyperscale cloud footprints.” Added Arora, “On the back of this strength, notably in our next-generation security offerings, we are raising our guidance for the year across revenue, billings, and earnings per share....

Workouts by the company’s subscribers dropped by roughly 20%, year over year, during the quarter. The report sent Peloton shares down by 5% in late trading. Peloton said in its shareholder letter that it was able to improve its logistics operations to return its time to ship devices to customers to “pre-pandemic levels” after substantial delays in the past year. Reflecting on the corporate wellness program that the company introduced in late June, Peloton said that the “initiative will provide employers, insurers, and other partners the ability to offer their employees and members subsidized access to Peloton Digital subscriptions, All Access Memberships, and/or Connected Fitness Products....

Rust, initially developed within Mozilla, is joining Meta as an officially endorsed server-side language. Adding Rust as a supported language was a “very careful and deliberate decision” to help engineers pick the best language for their projects, according to Meta. “Meta is committed to provide long-term support for programming languages used by our developer, and this move signals Meta’s long-term commitment and support for the Rust language ecosystem,” it said....

First reported by Energy Source & Distribution, the company said the incident has not impacted electricity generation at Callide and Kogan Creek power station, and it was looking to restore its network. “We immediately notified relevant state and federal agencies, and are working closely with them and other cybersecurity experts,” CEO Andrew Bills said. “We have contacted our retail customers to reassure them that there is no impact to their electricity supply and we have been regularly briefing employees about our response to this incident....

Research by the Neustar International Security Council (NISC) found that six in ten organisations would pay cyber criminals for the decryption key in the event of a ransomware attack, according to its survey of 300 workers in ‘senior positions’. That’s despite the likes of The White House, the UK Home Office, law enforcement and cybersecurity experts warning that paying the ransom should be avoided because it signals to ransomware operations that their extortion schemes work....

Launched today by British computer-maker Raspberry Pi, the Pi Zero 2 W features a 1GHZ CPU that the manufacturer claims packs 5x the performance for multithread workloads than 2015’s Raspberry Pi Zero. The 65mm x 30mm board features a quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A53 CPU, clocked at 1GHz. At its heart is a Raspberry Pi RP3A0 system-in-package (SiP), integrating a Broadcom BCM2710A1 SoC (the same used in the Raspberry Pi 3, albeit clocked-down slightly) with 512MB of LPDDR2 SDRAM....

Rheinmetall Defence Australia led the way, gaining almost AU$1.5 million for a 5G remote-controlled firefighting tank. “Rheinmetall is developing an autonomous/remote control ‘Firefighting Tank’ (called the Fire Tank), which is a purpose-built firefighting vehicle capable of traversing extremely dangerous terrains to support rescue, path clearing and firefighting missions,” the government described. “This project will investigate using low-band 5G to support long-range remote control of these vehicles. This vision of the people working in tech is not, perhaps, one that all managers recognise.
