On January 14, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced it had detained members of the REvil ransomware gang operating from several regions of the country and dismantled the group’s operations. Previous action by Europol resulted in the arrest of a suspected REvil affiliate near the Polish and Ukranian border. According to analysis of chatter on Dark Web forums by cybersecurity researchers at Trustwave SpiderLabs, the recent arrests, particularly those by Russia, appear to have scared cyber criminals, some of whom appear to be worried that they might be next....

Deloitte recently analyzed patents in the area of conversational AI to assess the direction of the market – and the technology has been developing quickly. “Rapid adoption of conversational AI will likely be underpinned by innovations in the various steps of chatbot development that have the potential to hasten the creation and training of chatbots and enable them to efficiently handle complex requests – with a personal touch,” the analyst team, led by Deloitte’s Sherry Comes, writes....

As ZDNet reported earlier this year, dozens of startups have been getting tens of millions in venture funding to make chips for AI in mobile and other embedded computing uses. Because the edge market is less settled, there are plenty of different ways that vendors will approach the problem. On Tuesday, AI chip startup SiMa dot ai formally unveiled what it calls its MLSoC, a system-on-chip for speeding up neural networks with lower power consumption....

And although Android 13 isn’t nearly the game-changer that Android 12 was, it’s still an impressive upgrade to the operating system. But what are my first impressions of the Android 13/Pixel 6 Pro combination? I thought I’d share them with you, so you can get a good idea of what’s coming when your device receives the update (or maybe sway your opinion – one way or the other – on purchasing a Pixel 6 Pro)....

According to Google’s Android security bulletin for December 2022, the most severe vulnerability is one in Android’s System component, which could allow attackers to remotely execute code over Bluetooth without the need for device permissions. The four critical vulnerabilities affect Android versions 10 to 13. Two of them – CVE-2022-20411 and CVE-2022-20498 – are in the System component of the Android operating system, while the other two – CVE-2022-20472 and CVE-2022-20473 – are in Android’s Application Framework and could allow attackers to remotely execute code, with no additional execution privileges needed....

The trojan – named FlyTrap by Zimperium researchers – has been able to spread through “social media hijacking, third-party app stores, and sideloaded applications” since March. Zimperium’s zLabs mobile threat research teams first identified the malware and figured out that it uses social engineering tricks to compromise Facebook accounts. The malware hijacks social media accounts by infecting Android devices, allowing attackers to collect information from victims like Facebook ID, location, email address and IP address, as well as cookies and tokens tied to your Facebook account....

Conducted last August by consultancy AlphaBeta, the online survey polled 2,166 employers and 7,193 workers across seven Asia-Pacific markets: Singapore, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea. Employers comprised business and IT managers from organisations in private and public sectors, while workers included tech and non-tech full-time employees who used digital skills in their jobs. Many people are forced to use a Windows PC at work but choose to have a MacBook for their more personal affairs. For them, presumably, there’s a marginal element of learning to live with both – followed by an innate switching from one system to another. That isn’t the case for everyone. But this time, I’m happy I took the plunge into the developer betas for iOS 16 and macOS. Why? The Continuity Webcam. According to Bloomberg, Apple will start using its custom displays as early as 2024 and possibly 2025 in a move away from its current mobile device display suppliers Samsung, LG, and Japan Display. As part of Apple’s custom display plan, the company would be making microLED screens in order to upgrade the current OLED screens used in the highest-end Apple Watches by the end of 2024. Eventually, Apple would bring microLED to the iPhone and other devices, according to the report....
