Microsoft promises the new method for updating Microsoft 365 apps will mean “zero notifications, zero disruptions” to users and will reduce the need for forced updates. “Update under lock” tries to shut down Office apps when its safe to do so and then apply a pending update. It then restores closed apps to their previous state. All this should happen in seconds, according to Microsoft. Microsoft has promised some new apps and features will be added to the newly rebranded Microsoft 365 Family and Personal subscriptions. In the blog post announcing the availability of the M365 consumer subscriptions, Microsoft didn’t offer any additional details on when these new features will be rolling out. There’s no word on when the promised new Family Safety or Money in Excel apps will be available. There’s also nothing new today on when the promised consumer-focused Teams features will be coming to the Microsoft Teams apps for iOS and Android....

The alignment with Android consoles for Teams Rooms and the Rooms on Windows PCs and displays is part of a visual refresh coming to Teams Rooms on Windows devices. The updates will be generally available by the end of Q1 and in Teams Rooms on Windows version 4.16, according to Microsoft. Microsoft is adding updated soft buttons on the Windows console for quick access to Meet, Call, Share (for HDMI content), Join via ID, and a More button for the overflow menu....

While there are dozens of tools available for static analysis of code in various languages to find security flaws, researchers have been exploring techniques that use machine learning to improve the ability to both detect flaws and fix them. That’s because finding and fixing bugs in code can be hard and costly, even when using AI to find them. Recent research shows the approaches pioneered by AlphaFold are spreading to the broader biology community. In a paper in the journal PNAS this month, “Deep learning guided optimization of human antibody against SARS-CoV-2 variants with broad neutralization,” scientists describe modifying a known antibody against COVID-19 in such a way as to boost its efficacy against multiple variants of the disease. “We enable expanded antibody breadth and improved potency by ∼10- to 600-fold against SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Delta,” starting from an antibody that had no effectiveness against the Delta variant, the scientists write....
