Rust, like some other memory-safe programming languages such as Go and Java, prevents programmers from introducing some kinds of memory bugs. All too often memory safety bugs go hand-in-hand with security issues. Unfortunately, much of the internet’s fundamental software is written in C, which is anything but memory safe. Of course, you can write memory-safe programs in C or C++, but it’s difficult. Conversely, you can create memory bugs in Rust if you try hard enough, but generally speaking Rust and Go are much safer than C and C++....

Zapata Computing, which provides quantum software services, has announced a new partnership with the UK’s University of Hull, which will see scientists use quantum computing tools to eventually help them detect molecules in outer space that could be precursors to life. During the eight-week program, quantum resources will be combined with classical computing tools to resolve complex calculations with better accuracy, with the end goal of finding out whether quantum computing could provide a useful boost to the work of astrophysicists, despite the technology’s current limitations....

The SEC report [pdf] found that during consecutive quarters in Nvidia’s 2018 fiscal year – as crypto prices boomed and a global chip shortage took hold – the company failed to disclose that its GPUs were increasingly being used for cryptomining and that this was a significant element of its material revenue growth. “Nvidia’s senior management internally expressed a desire to capture the cryptomining demand, and at the same time shelter its gaming business from cryptominers and protect supply of GPUs for gamers,” said the SEC report....

The government’s plans could see cars, coaches and lorries with self-driving features on motorways in the next year, with new legislation in the pipeline to allow the safe wider rollout of driverless vehicles by 2025. It has also started a consultation on a “safety ambition” proposal that would require a self-driving vehicle to be “as safe as a competent and careful human driver”, according to the Department of Transport’s announcement....

The Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) last month said it was working on two proposed Codes of Practice that aimed to improve the safety of social media users in the country. The first would require social media services providers to adopt upstream “system-wide” processes to bolster online safety for their users, particularly, the young. The second Code of Practice would empower industry regulator Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) to instruct social media platforms to cut access to specific “egregious harmful content” that remained available in spite of these operators’ content moderation systems....

The reality is that few companies will bring all employees back into the office five days a week. ZK Research found that 51% of employees plan to work from home two to three days a week and another 24% at least one day a week. The non-invasive koala monitoring technique will be used as part of a study on koalas at Kangaroo Island and the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges to understand their numbers, movements, behaviour, and physiology, and assess whether koalas will show any signs of stress. “Drone use in animal research is used a lot across Australia, especially in Queensland to monitor koalas. Until now, potential behaviour and physiological impacts haven’t been extensively researched so we are one of the few groups investigating this,” Flinders University researcher Dr Diane Colombelli-Négrel said....

Also: SpaceX tests global Starlink roaming service for $200 a month SpaceX launched 21 V2 Mini satellites on Tuesday from a Falcon 9 heavy rocket from Florida. It also stood down a launch of 51 Starlink Gen1 satellites from California due to unfavorable weather conditions. SpaceX chief Elon Musk confirmed V2 Mini satellites had reached orbit. The FCC in December issued SpaceX an authorization to launch 7,500 of 30,000 Gen2 Starlink satellites, which are approved to operate at altitudes of 525, 530, and 535 kilometers using frequencies in the Ku- and Ka-band....

Including these trips, the private firm will be responsible for at least 14 crewed missions to the ISS, allowing NASA to access the space station without interruption until 2030. For all 14 of these missions, NASA has awarded more than $4.9 billion to SpaceX, the company founded and run by Elon Musk. NASA astronauts have been relying on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft to reach the ISS since 2020. The agency retired its own space shuttle program in 2011 with plans to rely more on the nascent commercial space industry....
