“This will guarantee these operators the opportunity to acquire 10MHz of 900MHz band spectrum at the auction to support continuity of services. Optus and TPG Telecom rely heavily on their 900MHz holdings for their national mobile networks,” the minister said in a statement. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) previously said it was worried about the low-band holdings of Optus. “Optus’ ability to compete effectively in the mobile services market will likely be constrained if it does not acquire more sub-1GHz band spectrum in the 850/900MHz allocation,” the competition watchdog wrote in April....

In a bid to sweeten the deal for its customers that previously did not pay, Optus is offering those customers a AU$7 per month deal. “This compares favourably with other content streaming services that have emerged in the Australian landscape and is the first change to Optus Sport’s pricing since we first launched in 2016,” the company said in a blog post. Telenor, which is owned and controlled by the Norwegian government, has faced significant backlash for weeks after it announced a decision to sell its telecom business in Myanmar to a notorious Lebanese company called M1 Group for $105 million. News outlets in Myanmar have reported that M1 is already telling regulators in the country that it plans to sell 80% of Telenor Myanmar to Shwe Byain Phyu, a company with deep, longstanding ties to the country’s brutal military, according to local activist group Justice for Myanmar....

Tiobe, the compiler of a language popularity index, this week crowned Python as the most popular programming language, placing it ahead of Java, C and JavaScript for the first time in 20 years. The appeal of Python, a 30-year-old language, is it’s easy to learn, popular for machine learning and is backed by a big ecosystem of third-party software libraries that make it more useful in artificial intelligence, like Google’s TensorFlow and Facebook’s PyTorch....

Purchased for an undisclosed amount, Just Analytics will remain for the “foreseeable future” as its own brand, with Rackspace noting that the company has built “a well-known and respected brand among the leaders and customers of Microsoft Azure Data Analytics” that it aims to build on. Just Analytics employs more than 100 employees at its headquarters in Singapore, with additional employee presence in Vietnam and India. The analytics firm also has its data platform, Guzzle, listed on Microsoft Azure Marketplace....

Rackspace’s non-GAAP earnings per share in Q3 came to 25 cents on revenue of $763 million, up 12% year-over-year. Revenue growth was once again strong thanks to new customer acquisitions and growing customer spending in the company’s Multicloud Services and Apps & Cross Platform segments. Analysts were expecting earnings of 24 cents per share on revenue of $756 million. “The Cloud market continues to grow and momentum continues to accelerate,” CEO Kevin Jones said in a statement....

The total figure of ransomware attacks seen by SonicWall in the first half of 2021 smashed the 2020 total of 304.6 million. The fact that the first six months of 2021 have already surpassed all of 2020 alarmed SonicWall researchers, who added that it represented a 151% year-on-year increase. “Even if we don’t record a single ransomware attempt in the entire second half (which is irrationally optimistic), 2021 will already go down as the worst year for ransomware SonicWall has ever recorded,” the report said....

Microsoft service tools for Surface devices are now available from iFixit.com. Currently, three Microsoft-designed repair tools are being manufactured and sold by iFixit, enabling “precision debunking and rebounding” of components set in place with an adhesive. Notably, adhesives are one of iFixit’s main gripes about the design of modern laptops since components can’t be removed with a simple screwdriver. The ideal state is a modular design. iFixit says adhesives present one of the most challenging aspects of repairing Surface laptops because the adhesive needs to be carefully unfastened without damaging other components....

In a statement released on Monday, Robinhood said it discovered the incident on the evening of November 3, explaining that an “unauthorized third party” managed to obtain their customers’ personal information. The company was quick to say that no Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, or debit card numbers were exposed. But they admitted that about 7 million people had some amount of information leaked in the attack.
