Following an analysis of 623 ransomware incidents between May 2021 and June 2022, the ENISA threat landscape report for ransomware attacks warns that “the findings are grim” as ransomware becomes more efficient and is causing more devastating attacks. Ransomware presents a massive cybersecurity challenge, with many victims feeling as if they’ve got no other choice but to pay potentially millions in Bitcoin to free their data. But very few victims ever talk about what happened, with ENISA noting “publicly reported incidents are only the tip of the iceberg”....

According to Robinhood, in addition to featuring no network fees, the wallet will allow investors to earn yields on their assets. The new app will offer a similar experience to Robinhood’s current app, only investors will now hold their own wallet key and be able to access decentralized apps where they can trade and swap crypto. The app will also allow investors to connect to NFT marketplaces. Perhaps the most noteworthy feature is the lack of network fees....

Thanks to Covid crisis, the year 2020 was a boom year for cloud adoption, and it turns out things got pushed even deeper into the cloud during 2021. Samsung added a QWERTY keyboard to make it easier to enter information or reply to messages on the watch. The keys on the keyboard are small, but you can use Swipe to type. Previously you could use dictation or a handwriting feature to enter text. For those with a cellular Watch 4 model, you’ll now have a dual-SIM option. I’m not sure how many people use a cellular watch, let alone have two active SIMs for it, but apparently, Samsung thought it was worth adding the ability to switch between active SIMs....

Samsung earlier this year trialed what it then called ‘Repair Mode’ for some Galaxy phones in Korea. At that stage, it was unclear if the privacy-enhancing feature would be rolled out elsewhere. Now it is rolling out worldwide after a successful pilot on the Galaxy S21 series in Korea in July. The feature launched in China in September. The global rollout starts with Galaxy S22 devices and will continue “over the next few months on select models running One UI 5”, Samsung’s UI for Android....

As usual, Apple’s App Store leads in revenues, while the Google Play Store leads in app downloads. According to mobile analytics firm App Annie, Apple brought in $87.5 billion from iOS users in 2021, or a 65% share of $135 billion in total mobile app revenues, while Google Play raked in $47.25 billion, despite having a bigger user base. Rival analytics firm Sensor Tower’s estimates for 2021 are slightly different but in the same ballpark: mobile app spending reached $133 billion in 2021, growing 19....

SoftBank’s CEO pointed to China’s crackdown on tech companies as the main reason for the dip, with its investments in China having been hamstrung by fines and bans over the past six months. Now, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Fiji’s attorney-general and communication minister, has told The Wall Street Journal that a team from Elon Musk’s SpaceX is on the island attempting to set up a satellite interlink with its Starlink network. The goal is apparently to bring Tonga back online while repairs to the undersea cable are being completed. As the WSJ noted, a previous break in the cable caused by a ship’s anchor took two weeks to repair, even without a volcanic eruption’s devastation hindering efforts....
