Infected computers and devices in a cyber criminal-controlled botnet can be used to send phishing emails or malware to even more devices. It’s common for botnet operators to lease out their collection of unwittingly controlled machines – which can number in the thousands – to other cyber criminals. For example, TrickBot malware ropes machines into a botnet, providing the attacker with a backdoor into them. That access is often sold to cyber criminals who can then use them to deploy ransomware, using that access to encrypt files and demand a significant ransom payment....

Radar was late to the game in autonomous vehicles, early developers of which preferred lidar and visual camera sensing suites. But radar has distinct advantages. For one, it’s a fantastic sensor for collision avoidance, particularly when used in concert with other sensing modalities. One disadvantage, however, has been its weight and form factor. According to the DOJ, Koshkin ran Crypt4U.com, Crypt4U.net, fud.bz and fud.re, websites that helped hackers evade “nearly every major provider of antivirus software.” The tools allegedly enabled malware like Kelihos and others to be undetectable. Koshkin was arrested in California in September 2019 and transported to Connecticut for his trial before being convicted in June on one count of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse and one count of computer fraud and abuse....

The latest evidence is an exceptionally broad waiver granted by the agency Wednesday to a prominent drone service provider for a wide variety of commercial applications. The approval comes in the form of a new exemption issued by the FAA to Ondas Holdings’ American Robotics removing the limitations set on its previous exemption, which had restricted operations to “research and development, crew training, and market surveys.” The new exemption, along with American Robotics’ waiver for fully automated beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations, provides the company with the authority to operate its autonomous Scout System drone commercially without limitations on use....

For the period ending 31 March 2021, the company recorded net profit after tax of nearly AU$50 million, an 85% uplift on last year’s reported AU$7.3 million. “We are showing up as the ’new DXC’ for our customers and people. In a tweet, Musk linked to a story by Reuters, which said that Twitter had estimated that fake or spam accounts accounted for fewer than 5% of its monetizable daily active users during the first quarter. According to a report from Reuters, the electric vehicle battery maker that’s based in South Korea closed at 505,000 won ($419.62) in local stock exchanges, which equates to 68% above the initial public offering price. FinSpy, also known as FinFisher/Wingbird, is surveillanceware that has been detected in the wild since 2011. The software’s Windows desktop-based implants were detected in 2011, and mobile implants were discovered a year later. In 2019, Kasperksy researchers found new, upgraded Android and iOS samples, as well as signs of ongoing infections in Myanmar. The Indonesian government was also connected to the spyware’s use. At Kaspersky’s Security Analyst Summit (SAS) on Tuesday, researchers Igor Kuznetsov and Georgy Kucherin said that detection rates for Windows FinSpy implants have declined steadily over the past three years....

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) named Fredrick Brown of Las Vegas, Nevada, as a former medical records technician who had access to the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application, an electronic records system used to manage military-affiliated medical records. Between July 2014 and September 2015, the 40-year-old stole the personal identifying information (PII) of over 3,300 individuals, including “at least eight general officers, as well as numerous disabled veterans,” the DoJ says....
