Among other things, the Security Legislation Amendment (Critical Infrastructure) Bill 2020 would allow government to provide “assistance” to entities in response to significant cyber attacks on Australian systems. This includes the proposal for software to be installed that is touted as aiding providers in dealing with threats. The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) on Thursday morning heard from four large technology firms who declared they did not need assistance from the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) nor its Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) and that the installation of software would do more harm than good....

The new ‘Find My network’ capabilities should come in handy in numerous scenarios, including when an iPhone has run low on battery power or a thief has turned the phone off. Those figures come from analysis by Microsoft Security Intelligence, which notes that some of the most prominent ransomware attacks of recent times include Lockbit, BlackCat, Vice Society, and Royal. The attacks are also being helped along by how ransomware groups offer ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) schemes, enabling cyber criminals who don’t develop their own ransomware to get in on the action. Access to RaaS schemes is sold on underground forums, providing aspiring ransomware attackers with all the tools they need to conduct and manage attacks and extort ransom payments....

Microsoft’s Sylvie Liu said Azure worked with the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center to create Fusion detection for ransomware in a blog post. Microsoft’s Fusion technology uses machine learning to find potential attacks in progress and alert security teams. The system will send alerts when it sees ransomware activities at “defense evasion and execution stages during a specific timeframe.” Liu explained that the system would send messages like “Multiple alerts possibly related to Ransomware activity detected” in the Azure Sentinel workspace....

The Microsoft Security Program for Nonprofits has three different components, including free access to the AccountGuard program, free security assessments and free training pathways for IT administrators and end-users. Justin Spelhaug, vice president of Microsoft Tech for Social Impact, and Flora Muglia, business strategy manager for Microsoft Tech for Social Impact, told ZDNet that the company’s goal is to sign up 10,000 nonprofit organizations in the next year and 50,000 organizations over the next three years....

Microsoft released the Windows 10 Insider preview build 21390to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on May 26 and has now released a cumulative update in the form of build 21390.1000. It contains no new features and no fixes for known issues in build 21390. The company updated its original blogpost for build 21390 to inform Insiders that it won’t be doing the usual weekly release of new builds, but rather will be packing cumulative updates on build 21390 purely to test its servicing pipeline....
