In 2018, when the Mac mini was redesigned with the capacity for a generous amount of RAM and ports, I chose to buy it instead of waiting for the expected upcoming Mac Pro (and wrote about why)....

It’s not too often you hear about Magecart attacks. In the past few years, cybersecurity incidents that hit the headlines tended to involve attacks on core utilities and critical services, state-sponsored campaigns, ransomware, massive data breaches, and disruption on a broader scale than the issues that Magecart victims today often experience. However, this doesn’t mean that the problem has gone away, and we shouldn’t forget that it’s not only SMBs at risk: big brands have fallen prey to this type of cyberattack in the past, including British Airways, Newegg, and Ticketmaster....

The “multi-faceted” partnership meant GrabPay would be the first non-bank e-wallet to be available as a payment option across McDonald’s network across the city-state as well as the McDelivery app and website, the two partners said in a joint statement Monday. The fast food chain operates 130 restaurants, 17 drive-throughs, 42 dessert kiosks, and 48 McCafé outlets in Singapore, where it serves more than 6 million customers each month. Dubbed CoinStomp, the malware is compromised of shell scripts that “attempt to exploit cloud compute instances hosted by cloud service providers for the purpose of mining cryptocurrency,” according to Cado Security. The firm’s researchers say that the overall purpose of CoinStomp is to quietly compromise instances in order to harness computing power to illicit mine for cryptocurrency, a form of attack known as cryptojacking. A number of attack attempts have been focused, so far, on cloud service providers in Asia....

For example, in a photo of a box of fruit, using image segmentation, an AI model would be able to identify each individual fruit photographed and the box, as seen by the Meta demo. Meta’s Segment Anything project includes a new task, dataset, and model for image segmentation that aims to “democratize segmentation,” according to Meta....

Microsoft rolled back the block on macros with surprisingly little explanation given that the new default behavior in Office apps was aimed at cutting off a primary means for delivering malware in email attachments. Since April, key Office apps on Windows have, by default, made it much harder to run VBA macros that have been delivered from the internet. Previously, users could fairly easily click a button to enable macros, which attackers frequently exploited to trick them into downloading malware....

Good ideas are harder. But ideas that might go one way or the other seem to roll out of tech companies like barrels out of a pub cellar. The latest one that’s captivated me to a curious humming disharmony comes from Microsoft. It’s one that I’m sure has only the best of intentions, but it may turn toward pain, sorrow, and guttural ululation because life’s like that. CISA said it added the vulnerability “based on evidence that threat actors are actively exploiting” it. Cybersecurity company Deepwatch said in a blog last week that proof-of-concept code was publicly disclosed and that threat actors with limited access to a compromised device “can utilize this vulnerability to quickly elevate privileges, allowing them to spread laterally inside the network, create new administrator users, and run privileged commands.” “According to the security researcher credited with disclosing the vulnerability to Microsoft, the vulnerability has already been exploited by advanced persistent threat (APT) actors....

The Australian energy giant said the proposal, which was received on Saturday, 19 January 2022, “materially undervalues” the company and would not be in the “best interests” of shareholders. There is nothing wrong with the look and feel of the Moto G22. It has a plastic chassis with a mildly reflective backplate. The screen sits in noticeable bezels, particularly at the bottom edge, but the bezels are by no means huge and are not especially off-putting. For the record, Motorola claims a screen-to-body ratio of 89.03%, although our calculation puts it at 83%. The Moto G22 is a bit on the thick side at 8....

NAB boasts that unlike other BNPL products, NAB Now Pay Later charges no late fees, interest, and account fees. NASA is expecting a “rapid uptick” in new near-Earth astroid (NEA) discoveries thanks to new satellites coming online in coming years, such as NASA’s upcoming Near-Earth Object Surveyor space telescope and Chile’s Vera C.
