The firm’s data scientists say in a new report that 34% of devices currently being used aren’t capable of running Windows 11 because of Microsoft’s mildly controversial minimum hardware requirements. “While the benefits of Windows 11 are clear, some of the device requirements will make a transition challenging. More than a third of devices currently in use today are not capable of running Windows 11,” it said. This mountain of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) is only set to get bigger. According to a new report published by the international organization, the WEEE Forum, e-waste is on course to increase by up to 4% every year to reach 74 million tonnes by 2030. One of the main reasons for the explosion of global e-waste generation is the high consumption rates of electronics, which the WEEE Forum says is increasing by 3% annually....

According to Kaspersky, a wave of “highly targeted attacks” on several organizations was traced that utilized a chain of zero-day exploits in the Google Chrome browser and Microsoft Windows systems over April 14 and 15, 2021. The attackers have been named PuzzleMaker. The first exploit in the chain, while not confirmed, appears to be CVE-2021-21224, a V8 type confusion vulnerability in the Google Chrome browser prior to 90.0.4430.85. Google issued a patch for the severe flaw on April 20, which if exploited, allowed remote attackers to execute arbitrary code inside a sandbox via a crafted HTML page....

By using virtual machines as part of the process, ransomware attackers are able to conduct their activity with additional subtlety, because running the payload within a virtual environment reduces the chances of the activity being discovered – until it’s too late and the ransomware has encrypted files on the host machine. During a recent investigation into an attempted ransomware attack, cybersecurity researchers at Symantec found the ransomware operations had been using VirtualBox – a legitimate form of open-source virtual machine software – to run instances of Windows 7 to aid the installation of ransomware....
