ZDNet caught up with Dr. Katia Walsh, Chief Strategy and AI Officer at Levi’s, to talk about implementing AI, machine learning and data science at a 168-year-old company during a pandemic. Malicious extensions redirect users to phishing sites and insert affiliate IDs into cookies of eCommerce sites, according to a McAfee blog post Monday. The security company says the extensions also track users’ browsing activity, and every website visit is sent to servers owned by the extension creator. The extension creator can then insert code into eCommerce websites being visited by the user, and receive affiliate payment for any items the user purchases....

The company reported its Q3 earnings last month, with revenues down $4 billon year over year to $27.7 billion and almost no growth in user numbers across its core Family of Apps, namely Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. While layoffs in the tech sector have been happening for the past few months, layoffs of this scale by one of the top tech firms is a sign of how tough things are looking even for some of the world’s most valuable companies....

Microsoft’s 365 Defender Team points out that ’toll billing’, or Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) fraud, is more complex than SMS fraud or call fraud because of its multi-step attack flow that developers are improving. WAP fraud involves using an infected device to connect to payment pages of a premium service via a device’s WAP connection. The Redmond giant’s latest round of patches, usually released on the second Tuesday of each month in what is known as Patch Tuesday, includes fixes for 117 flaws tackling RCEs, privilege escalation, spoofing, memory corruption, and information disclosure. Thirteen are considered critical, and nine are zero-days – with four under active exploit. Products impacted by Microsoft’s latest security update, issued on July 13, include Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Excel, Microsoft Exchange Server, Windows Defender, Windows Kernel, and Windows SMB....

On July 15, the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) said that the Redmond giant has been quietly tackling the threat posed to Windows operating systems by the organization, dubbed a “private-sector offensive actor” (PSOA). A tip provided by human rights outfit Citizen Lab led Microsoft to the PSOA, dubbed Sourgum, a company said to sell cyberweapons including the DevilsTongue malware. “The weapons disabled were being used in precision attacks targeting more than 100 victims around the world including politicians, human rights activists, journalists, academics, embassy workers, and political dissidents,” Microsoft says....

January 2023 Patch Tuesday addresses two zero-day flaws but only one of them is known to be actively exploited, which is the critical Windows flaw, tracked as CVE-2023-21674. This flaw allows an attacker with local privileges to elevate to system, the highest level of privileges. It has a CVSSv3 severity score of 8.8 out of 10. Notably, this flaw affects the Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC) and, as Rapid7’s Greg Wiseman notes, is reminiscent of an ALPC zero-day in September 2018 that was swiftly employed in malware campaigns....

The Presenter+ will sell for $79.99 and the Audio Dock for $249.99. The Enterprise SKUs for Windows 365 are priced similarly. A single virtual core, 2 GB of RAM and 64 GV of storage will go for $20 per user per month. At the high end, the 8 virtual core, 32 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage SKU will go for $158 per user per month. Windows 365/Cloud PC won’t only support Microsoft apps; the service also will allow users to remotely log into any app that can run on Windows 10 or 11....

The new Surface Pro 9 is the culmination of Microsoft’s biggest hits and lessons learned, offering its Windows-on-Arm and Intel-based platforms within the same hardware design. The results from Uniting Cloud’s Software Engineer and DevOps Industry Report 2022 found that 50% of developers and DevOps professionals have moved roles in the last year. Of the 50% who have not moved roles, 71% had considered doing do.
