Firefox determines which add-ons are “most popular” by calculating their average daily users (ADU) throughout the entire year. Adblock Plus averaged 6,134,231 daily users while uBlock Origin averaged 5,011,974 throughout 2021. Firefox notes that uBlock Origin is hot on Adblock Plus’ heels, closing the gap between the two as the year progressed. Firefox estimates that the add-on may pass Adblock Plus at some point in 2022. Privacy appears to be a significant issue for Firefox users....

Compared to the previous version, the new Proton interface uses a bit more vertical space for tabs, swaps out any sort of tab divider for more background colour, and introduces a bunch of whitespace for the main menu as well as reorganising it and stripping out most of the icons. “Floating tabs neatly contain information and surface cues when you need them, like visual indicators for audio controls. The rounded design of the active tab supports focus and signals the ability to easily move the tab as needed,” Mozilla said in its release notes on the new tab design....

The retailer has partnered with carmaker Ford and autonomous vehicle platform company Argo AI to launch the new service. Ford’s self-driving test vehicles, equipped with Argo AI’s self-driving system, will be delivering Walmart orders to customers. Users within the defined service areas of the three cities will have access to the service. They will be able to place orders of groceries online for door-to-door autonomous delivery. The trial is expected to begin later this year and will expand to new locations over time....

More than 20 service providers launched 5G standalone networks last year, with twice the number expected to follow suit in 2022, according to Ericsson’s latest mobility report. 5G subscriptions climbed 70 million in the first quarter of 2022 to reach 620 million. The new version of ‘google-cloud-logging’, v3.0 on GitHub, gives Python developers real-time insights into the performance of an application hosted on Google Cloud’s compute infrastructure. Now Google has improved the way it displays quoted search results in snippets by basing them on where a quoted word or phrase occurs in a page. Google made the changes based on feedback from Search users who do quoted searches such as “Google search” to find a page with that exact phrase. “We’ve heard feedback that people doing quoted searches value seeing where the quoted material occurs on a page, rather than an overall description of the page....

“This pilot will help us to increase our understanding of whether and how user choice billing works for users in different countries and for developers of different sizes and categories,” Google said in a blog post. According to Spotify, the pilot between the two companies represents a “first-of-its-kind option in payment choice” and forms part of a “multi-year agreement”.
