AWS identified two core use cases for the new Global Clusters feature: disaster recovery, for ensuring that the database stays live in the event of a regional outage, and low-latency reads across different local regions scattered across the globe. The Global Clusters feature expands on DocumentDB’s existing active-passive replication capability, where change events are replicated from the primary instance to read-only secondary instances. Until now, DocumentDB supported replication to a maximum of 15 replicas across three availability zones (AZs), within the same region....

The tech giant announced in August that it was delaying plans to bring back staff until early 2022 due to surging COVID-19 cases. At the time, its intention was to see staff back in the office at least three days a week. The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision pauses an injunction ordered in September that sought to require Apple to remove its App Store rule of banning developers from adding in-app links to payment websites. “Apple has demonstrated, at minimum, that its appeal raises serious questions on the merits of the district court’s determination that Epic Games failed to show Apple’s conduct violated any antitrust laws but did show that the same conduct violated California’s Unfair Competition Law,” the appellate court said....

The organisation had initially expected the system was going to be ready for industry-wide testing in July 2020, which would have resulted in the system being ready to go-live by April 2021. However, the ASX revised the implementation timetable for replacing CHESS due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, it announced at the time, the CHESS platform would be ready by April 2022. This date was then revised months later to April 2023....

For the three years to 30 June 2021, the number of “severity 1” incidents that were recorded was one, compared to the three years to 30 June 2015 where 15 occurred. Ludwig said the vulnerability was initially reported through Atlassian’s bug bounty program on June 30th by Benny Jacob and that their security team quickly realized it was a critical issue. The patch was available by August 15, and security bulletins were sent out on August 25. They also submitted the vulnerability and patch to NIST and other government organizations so that it could be disseminated further. The information was sent out to Atlassian’s channel partners and account managers so that emails to customers could be sent out....

The Security Legislation Amendment (Critical Infrastructure Protection) Bill 2022 contains outstanding elements of cyber laws passed by the Parliament last year, per recommendations from the parliamentary committee that is currently reviewing the laws. Among these outstanding elements are requirements for entities deemed “most important to the nation” to adhere to enhanced cybersecurity obligations, such as potentially installing third-party software. Addressing the parliamentary committee that is reviewing the Bill, Somerville said there is a lack of clarity on how the software installation scheme would operate, and that the federal government saying it would only be used as a “last resort” is not sufficient....

The Bill, colloquially known as a “Magnitsky-style” of law, if enshrined, would allow the Australian government to directly issue sanctions against individuals or entities that ban them from visiting Australia or making any investments in the country. The legislation is partly based on the United States’ Magnitsky Act, which was ratified in a bid to punish Russian officials that were responsible for the death of whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky who accused them of tax fraud....
